THE DAUGHTER OF A VEGAS SHOWGIRL AND MORE THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT HP!

Good morning, Bloggers, Happy Columbus Day! I'm such an idiot, totally thought we were off today so I made no childcare plans, thought I'd have a great day with the kids until...... Haines flatly told me live on the air Friday that "Liz, we ARE working Monday."  Oops.  No worries. Being the master of quick change with a little MacGyver tossed in, I managed to get here today ready to blog and broadcast for you guys.

Everyone's talking about Carly Fiorina's "60 Minutes" interview.  Some of the guys on Squawk Box called her smug. I'm just wondering whether "smug" from a woman would be seen as "confidence" from a man. Seriously, I'm not one of these people who says, "You're just giving her a hard time for being a woman" but I've watched with amusement how she was eviscerated by so many----and for what? For taking on the gutsy acquisition of Compaq?   Which, today, sure looks like a smart move for HP?  I'm hardly the only one who's said this. Alan Murray of the Wall Street Journal has been writing about it for months.

As for ousted Chairman Patricia Dunn, there's a great front page article in the Journal this morning about the drama and trauma that went on between her and board member Tom Perkins.  You can just imagine how much tension there was between them.  I mean, here's a guy who was an original HP employee, a true genius who made billions by thinking outside the box, really being a VISIONARY.  And he had to go up against Patricia Dunn, a classic "by the book" type of corporate operator who, according to the WSJ, was never the "original thinker" type and always reprimanded board members for "not following procedure."  I cringe when I hear that.  It's another word for "bureaucratic" thinking.  Talk about oil and water.  But you learn some very interesting things about Dunn in the article that you might not have known before...like, her mother was a VEGAS SHOWGIRL.  She endured a grueling 3-bus commute just to get to college everyday on scholarship.   And Perkins? I'd love to meet him and just hear him spew.  Sounds like quite a character.

One thing's for sure.  HP was, and to some extent still is, a company in turmoil.  Such a soap opera for us outsiders, but a nightmare for the insiders.
We'll follow it all for you!
    Blog later,
    Liz

The CARLYBAN was responsible for the destruction of many hundreds of millions of dollars in share holder value. What it took Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard 50 years to build, it took the Carlyban merely 5 years to destroy.

HP will never be what it was: A wonderful company full of wonderful people, going about their wonderful business and being very successful at it.

IMO the CARLYBAN is nothing but an empty suit held up by bull shit.

Ditto her girlfriend. These 2 women were hired out of a misguided PC attempt, niether of them were qualified for their positions, and they turned HP into a laughing stock of a company.  Had they been men, they would never have been hired to their positions in HP because of their lack of accomplishments and experience.

the Carlyban did the same thing to HP she did at Lucent = drove it down thev toilet thru her incompetence.

Good riddance to bad rubbish , but the HP image and reputation will never ever totally recover.

Walter Hewlett was right all along = thank you Walter.

I am still searching to respond to nbc/today show. While I am still lost I will comment here. If they are going to show case syncronized anything the need to watch old Ester Williams movies. The key is to move the cameras high and shoot down that is where the beauty is.

Under the microscope everyone has flaws. even Mr. Perkins and Mr. Keyworth ( After all he was HP'S leak source; did he not break the HP standards by which the Board agreed to operate?). Individuals, such as Perkins and Keyworth, use their high net worth to create organizations of privilege called Board of Directors in companies and protect each other and their financial gain. Those that step out of line are punished severely. Look at the list of names of Directors in similiar sector companies. They fill these slots with the same people, thus insuring perpetuation of their real aim, which is their wealth and ego.  I am troubled by the air of superiority and entitlement than pervades Corporate America. Corporations are not personal banks and playgrounds of the few who attain positions on the Boards of Directors and Chief Managers. These positions have become "fraternities" and as such operate like them. Their miss deeds have littered the newspapers in illegal stock option deals, fraud, accounting scandals to name a few. These are only the ones we know about, what about the multitude scandals than have occurred behind closed board doors, held secret by intimidation and threat.

Liz, I find your BLOG troubling. I did not expect this of you, for I have valued your work on CNBC. Surely, there is a place in adult organizations where different styles of thinking can co-exist. As a HPQ stockholder, I value all problem solving styles to work for me. But then the Board of Directors aren't really working for me are they? Where Ms. Dunn came from and how her mother supported her, is not relevant to her job qualifications! If I had a choice to meet Ms. Dunn or Mr. Perkins, I would rather meet Ms. Dunn. I always value people who are not enamoured with themselves and what they won. Egos that run wild are really very predictable and dull.

While I don't think Carly is an altogether bad person or business idiot, I don't think she was ever qualified to run a corporation like HP.  Her organizational responsibilities increased a hundredfold in a mere 5 years from the time she was at Lucent to becoming CEO of HP -- and there's no record of her having a stellar performance at Lucent, either.  Her tenure at HP was plagued with irresponsible, selfish behavior, and that was enough icing on the cake for the board to want her out.  She didn't really have a plan, other than making noise.

Dunn, too, is arguably a "borrowed ladder" that got her to the top.  She was a part-time secretary for a financial services company and *poof* non-executive chairman of HP?  I hardly think that's the kind of pedigree that would measure well against people like Perkins and Keyworth who spent decades as technologists.

I wrote more about it on my own blog.  The bigger question, to me, is how either of these people ascended to these roles.  "Grossly unqualified" should have been a notable description when reviewing candidates, especially for CEO.

Love the show, and glad you got the kids off okay. :)

Carly's firing from HP was more than appropriate and if anything long overdue. The board can be criticized for letting her go far too long. She was a failure as a leader at HP and continues to totally self-serving and dishonest. Spin is everything for Carly. Her performance last night was very transparent for anyone who has seen her in action in the past.
